Some thoughts on dreaming and doing

Hello bloggers,
We can be sure of one thing in this world.  If we decide to do nothing, nothing’s going to happen.  If we do something, something will happen.  One happening creates other happenings.  One thing leads to antoher.  The culture we live in is not imposed on us; we impose it on ourselves, because we either give into it or are concerned with, “What they will think?”Being nice, attentive, helpful, loving, caring, being a doer really is how families, tribes, and communities work.  It’s only when we measure how much money we have that it becomes a competitive race of “Hurray for me, and the hell with you.”  That mentality then causes the tensions that we see around us.
I’m a resident of Florida and meet weekly with other artists at a coffee shop.  One day I said, “Did I mention that new building where I’d like for all of us to put a painting on a wall?”  Everybody remembered when we’d talked about it.  This was a Wednesday and I said, “Let’s do it Monday!”  Somebody said, “How?”  And I said, “Well, call them up and tell them we’re coming!”
After the conversations with the powers that be, we arrived on the scene, and unbeknownst to us, somebody had called the newspapers, a local coffee shop had brought in coffee, and then the magazines showed up looking for us, so we had to reassemble later on.  So these events don’t have to be thought out years ahead of time.  It reminds me of the old Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney movies, where they said, “Let’s do a show right here in the barn!”  And the world gets changed.  As they say, Just do it.  Anything!  If it makes sense and it’s legal and it’s fun, just do it!  There will be naysayers who ask you if you have permission from all the corporations and city council and sheriff’s department and five bureaucratic agencies.  Forget it and just do it.  And if they don’t like it, paint it white and to hell with it!
Matt
